About Health Care Choices

I’m Donna Smith. Welcome to Health Care Choices!

Health insurance is confusing and frustrating. It often leads to surprise bills and denied treatment. When you only want to focus on getting well and staying that way, your precious energy is spent fighting a complex insurance system.

How Health Care Choices Can Help

Through blog posts I’ll explain the choices you can make that will help make your insurance work for you.  Along the way, you’ll learn how insurance plans work, how to read bills and claims, and how to file appeals.  You’ll also learn about the choices insurance companies and legislators make that can improve, complicate or increase the cost of insurance plans.

As a health care advocate, I provide individualized services to help you resolve insurance issues.

My Story

My passion for health insurance is personal.  When I was just four years old, a heart surgeon saved my life by repairing my complex congenital heart defect.  Insurance saved my parents from financial hardship. Dad’s insurance paid most of the costs with no arguments, appeals, or bureaucratic roadblocks.  The year was 1960.  Insurance has changed a lot since then – and not in a good way.

My expertise comes from over 30 years working with insurance plans.  Beginning in the early 1990’s, I began to see the devastating impact that insurance changes were having on consumers.  As the challenges for getting decent benefits at reasonable costs grew, I increasingly began advocating for those trying to access their benefits.

Health Care Choices brings the benefits of my personal and professional experiences to help you understand and resolve health insurance issues.  But health insurance continues to change.  And as it does, I will continue to learn about those changes. I will share with you how those changes impact you through my writing, including blog posts, and advocacy.

When not immersed in all things health insurance and health care related, I enjoy cooking, casual entertaining centered on good food and great conversations, travel, and reading.  Amidst all of that, my dog, Brody, reminds me in many persuasive ways that we also need to take long walks and play ball…with treats, of course.
